L-8 Canal Gated Control Structures

WRMA provided control structure retrofit design and repairs for three gated control structures on the L-8 canal experiencing degradation and erosion on the bank of the levee following Hurricane Irma.

The WRMA design team examined the structural condition of the control structures and commissioned a topographic survey of the structures and adjacent sites. WRMA provided a stabilization design solution to address bank erosion and specified repairs of sandbag cement rip-rap on the existing culvert headwalls.

Additionally, the design team improved maintenance and operations by providing specifications for the design of new operable weir plates controls utilizing a bevel gear system to allow for both manual and automatic operation of the gate and provided bank stabilization design services to protect the existing embankment using turf reinforcement.
